7 International Galleries Meet Up in Zut!

Zut! Paris | 18 -23 October 2022

Zut! is a collaborative exhibition which celebrates the intersection of art and design.

Occupying an 18th century mansion on 72 rue de l’Université in the 7th arrondissement, this immersive exhibition is the brainchild of 7 international galleries: A1043 (Paris), Deli Gallery (New York), Friedman/Johnson (New York/Miami), Galerie Mitterrand (Paris), Salon 94 Design (New York), The Breeder (Athens), and Volume Gallery (Chicago).

Built in 1728 as the Hôtel de Guise, this once opulent hotel particulier has been known under many names including Hôtel du président Chauvelin, Hôtel de Rougé, Hôtel de Mme de Lurcy and finally, L’Hôtel Chauvelin de Crisenoy. While its former grandeur eventually fell into romantic decay, it has more recently become inspiration for artists and curators alike who have breathed new life into its derelict shell.

Zut! embraces the building’s storied past, and responds with different visions of how contemporary art and design can synergistically co-exist. Installed in this modern ruin, each installation triggers the imagination with a sense of possibility,  impermanence, and play.

In the heart of The Breeder’s presentation at Zut! are Philippe Malouin‘s sculptural works from the series “Steel Works”. Malouin’s practice is located at the junction point between craftsmanship, sculpture and industrial design. In this body of work, he explores the relationship of lighting, furniture and sculpture, threading the historical and the cultural through a modern lens. Malouin creates an interesting dialogue between materials, form and functionality and assembles steel elements sourced from scrapyards in a way that is both innovative and compelling, ensuring he captures all the possibilities the material has to offer.

With the presentation in Zut!, The Breeder also highlights selected artists in their program: Larry Amponsah, Ekene Stanley Emecheta, Luke Edward Hall, Maria Hassabi, Lulama Wolf Mlambo, Katlego Tlabela, Barry Yusufu and more. The artists presented here work across various mediums ranging from painting to sculpture, video and performance and engage in a cross-generational dialogue. Although each artist’s practice is compellingly diverse from the next, each one dismantles formal convention in pursuit of new connections, via their distinct interpretations of painting, collage and assemblage.
